On Defense Unit
Defense Unit, as I mentioned before, is a very standard kill your enemies before they kill you game. Instead of completely dismissing it, I committed myself to spending more than the five minutes of fun that I usually allocated to such games. I wanted to see if I view games any differently now that I'm an adult.
After mindlessly blasting away with unlimited ammunition, I tried playing the game differently. I challenged my own gameplay by conserving my shots, and seeing how accurately I could kill my enemies with single shots. This definitely made Defense Unit harder than before, but I must admit, my aim was horrible, so I lapsed back into rapid fire mode whenever my fragile base was threatened.
By itself, the game does grow more challenging. More enemies buzz about the screen and from time to time formidable bosses attack.
I was amused the first time I played this game, due to the familiar concept and the low tech graphics. However, it got old fast, and I couldn't really get 'hooked' to it.
I kept on asking myself some questions during play: What's so important with this area that I must defend it? Who am I destorying? Where's my back-up? More importantly, who am I and can I ever get out of this gun turrett? I suppose as an adult, the story is more important to me.
I needed some more context to draw me in. I just didn't feel any motivation to continue to blast away these buzzards on my screen. It doesn't call for any intereseting strategy. Plus, there was no room for growth or development in the sense of increased capabilities (stronger weapons for example). I think if these elements were added, perhaps I could have played this game for awhile longer.
Sigh...on to the next game.
